Andrea Wittgens is In The Skyline on New CD From Seattle-based Singer/Songwriter/Keyboardist Due June 16 on Trapdoor Music Label
SEATTLE, WA - Trapdoor Music announces a June 16 release date for In the Skyline, the first full-length CD from singer/songwriter/keyboardist Andrea Wittgens, with national distribution by Burnside Distribution.
“A silver tongue rides a voice that flitters with the wonderful unpredictability of a butterfly and the laser precision of, well, a laser…this imaginative pop maestro’s delivery and message are so delightfully refreshing that it’s hard to remember she’s working from the pop music playbook” was how one publication (Seattle Sound Magazine) described the music of Andrea Wittgens, whose smart, playful, dreamy, insightful, ironic songs are delivered by a voice that’s been variously compared to Rickie Lee Jones, Regina Spektor and PJ Harvey.
In the Skyline is a 12-song ode to escapism, a vividly spun world where reality meets fantasy, powered by a sound based in pure pop music, colored with a musical palette that touches on rock and acoustic flourishes, with some of the most adventurous arrangements that feature everything from Mellotrons, to Farfisa organ sounds and string quartets. The dozen all-original tracks on In the Skyline were recorded at several studios in Seattle and New York City.
Andrea Wittgens hails originally from the small town of Antigonish (pronounced “Anna-ga-‘nish”) in Nova Scotia, but moved to Seattle in the mid-‘90s. With an early exposure to both classical piano and dance, she continued her training in both disciplines through high school and college at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. Along the way, she also studied jazz, which manifests itself in her improvisational approach to music. She graduated with a dual major in music and French, which she utilizes in the last song on the new CD, “Comme tu veux,” her first original French song.
After moving to Seattle, Andrea began her pop writing career in earnest, playing late nights at raucous beer joints and pubs in the Pioneer Square section of that city, eventually meeting the musicians who would join her in the group Sugartown, which released an EP, Blue Eyed Fool, in 2000. That EP created a substantial buzz in Seattle and featured a fun-pop sound that led to a second release, How Do You Love, Aquamarine?, which also helped launch the band on the road along the West Coast, hitting cities such as Portland, Ashland, Eugene, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Andrea began her solo career in 2006 when she teamed up with Grammy-winning producer/mixer Bob Power (Erykah Badu, Maktub) which resulted in the release of the Alibi EP in October of that year. With that disc in hand, she started generating rave critical reviews for both her new CD and her live performances at such NYC venues as The Living Room, The Knitting Factory and The Bitter End.
