The story of Blue Bella
Records is very much
like the story of the
music they present to
the world: it originated
in Chicago, but its
reach extends well
beyond the Windy City.
What started as the very
definition of an
independent label,
created as the imprint
for one artist to
release his own music,
has grown into a roster
of talent delivering the
most exciting and
critically-acclaimed
blues and American roots
music being made today.
Founded in 1998 by
Nick Moss, Blue
Bella Records continues
to thrive and grow under
the direction of Moss
himself, along with his
wife, Kate. Like many,
Moss went to college
following high school,
but what set him apart
is the “institution” he
attended. Instead of
going the traditional
route, Moss learned his
craft by serving as an
apprentice to some of
the greatest names and
legends of authentic,
traditional Chicago
blues. Under the
tutelage of Jimmy
Rogers, Willie “Big
Eyes” Smith, and Jimmy
Dawkins, Moss studied
the foundations of the
music that has inspired
and transformed
generations of artists,
while also discovering
his own voice.
