Singer/Songwriter John Brannen Returns

With Twilight Tattoo

New Sly Dog Records CD, Produced By David Z

and John Brannen, Due June 27

HARPER WOODS, MI – Sly Dog Records has announced a June 27 release date for Twilight Tattoo, the new CD from Asheville, North Carolina-based singer/songwriter John Brannen.

Produced by David Z and John Brannen, Twilight Tattoo features a dozen original songs written or co-written by Brannen, who was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, and whose music and lyrics evoke the sights and sounds of the South as seen through the eyes of this troubadour. “The South is the crossroads and the synthesis of the Western world,” says Brannen. “All the great characteristics of existence are here, from the ugliness, tragedy, sorrow and depravity to the beauty, romance, comedy and nobility.”

Recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, the new CD showcases John Brannen backed by a stellar group of players, including Jack Holder and Duane Jarvis on guitars, Giles Reaves on keyboards, David Smith on bass, Tom Hambridge on drums and Kevin Bowe on harmonica and guitar. Lucinda Williams duets with Brannen on the song, “A Cut So Deep,” one of the new CD’s many highlights.

The songs on Twilight Tattoo run the gamut from energetic rockers (“Just Restless,” “Boom Baby Boom” “Heartbreak Ridge,” “Jericho Road” and “Vagabond Saints”) to introspective ballads (“Almost Love,” “A Cut So Deep,” “Goin’ Fishin’” and “The Mountain”), with many stops in-between, all distinguished by Brannen’s engaging view as an observer and story-teller in the great tradition of the South. The title track is an honest look at the current military war as seen through the eyes of a Southern soldier.

John Brannen’s last CD for Sly Dog, The Good Thief, was produced by Pete Carr and released in 2004 to excellent critical acclaim, including No Depression, which called it “an original hybrid,” and Billboard, which singled the CD out as “versatile and rewarding.”

John Brannen will support the release of Twilight Tattoo with touring plans to be announced shortly. Sly Dog Records is distributed nationally by Ryko Distribution.
